Translating Franz Kafka into English by Way of Manga
David Yang (Doctoral candidate in the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at UCLA)
He will discuss his experience of translating Nishioka Kyōdai’s manga adaptation of Franz Kafka’s stories into English. In particular, he reflects on the medium specificity of manga and the challenges it poses to translation, as well as his hybrid translation process, which relied on the Japanese text as well as Kafka’s German original. These different layers of mediation allow readers to experience Kafka’s masterpieces in fresh new ways.
